So here we sit in front of the fire, on the longest night of the year, Winter Solstice. It seemed only fitting that there should be a cocktail to celebrate the day (ok, we’re doing some pretty serious relaxing here Chez Real Food Made Easy!)
I was initially inspired to use a good Canadian Whiskey, seeing as Canadian grains seem to me to be the embodiment of cold Canadian winters, and drawing on the Greek myth of Persephone and those pesky pomegranate seeds she ate while in Hades, I also used my homemade hibiscus grenadine. The whole works is a bit of a riff on an Aviation, using a different base liquor, and is garnished with 3 cherries, representing the 3 months of winter that Perspehone had to spend each year in the Underworld. I hope you enjoy in your own Winter Solstice Celebration, however you may spend it.
Winter Solstice Cocktail
- 2 oz. Forty Creek Whiskey
- 0.5 oz. Maraschino liqueur
- 0.5 oz. hibiscus grenadine (mine is a bit tart, so you might want to use a little less if yours is sweet)
- 0.5 oz. fresh lemon juice
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters (when my cherry bitters are done, I might replace the Angostura with cherry!)
Shake with ice and double strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with 3 cherries.
